It’s another rainbow month. It's a time for parades, educational events, and advocacy, highlighting the progress made in the fight for equality and the ongoing efforts to ensure all individuals can live openly and authentically. As we celebrate, it's crucial to emphasize the importance of supporting LGBTQ+ rights in a manner that respects and upholds the rights of all individuals. We are always excited about the progress we have made so far in inclusion and rights. The rainbow signifying the diversity, Pride Month is an opportunity for both celebration and reflection, fostering a greater understanding and support for LGBTQ+ people worldwide.
Kenya and Africa in general has been reluctant when it comes to this matter. Because we feel like we have other major issues such as hunger, floods and what not and this does not feel like a priority. However, these people live among us and their life cannot pause for the hunger and floods to end. We have to acknowledge what is there right in front of us. The people that chose to love the same gender. I mean, love is love and the heart wants what it wants. Our creator saw it fit to have unique ones among us. The reluctant nature is the lack of knowledge especially from the older generation and concerns that are raised especially about the gender identity. Sexual orientation and gender identity are integral aspects of our selves and should never lead to discrimination or abuse.
Supporting LGBTQ+ rights are about ensuring that everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, enjoys the same freedom and protection as anyone else. This includes the right to marry, the right to work without discrimination, the right to access healthcare, and the right to live free from violence and harassment. At the end of it all they are human and have the same rights.
While supporting LGBTQ+ rights, it's essential to ensure that this support does not infringe on the rights of others. This balance is vital in creating a society where everyone can coexist respectfully and harmoniously. Engaging in respectful and constructive conversations about LGBTQ+ rights and other sensitive topics helps build a more inclusive society. It's essential to listen, understand, and address concerns without resorting to hostility. This month we are advocating for a world where everyone's rights are recognized and respected. Through education, empathy, and respectful dialogue, we can build a future where all people, regardless of their identity, can live freely and authentically.
