Raise Your Voice Statement on Police Brutality and Human Rights Violations in Kenya

Raise Your Voice is deeply appalled by the recent acts of police brutality resulting in the deaths of young protesters against the Finance Bill 2024 in Kenya. These actions violate human rights, Article 37 of the Kenyan Constitution, and democratic principles. We condemn this violence and demand an immediate cessation.

We call on the Kenyan government to:

  • Conduct thorough, transparent investigations into police brutality.
  • Address systemic issues within the police force, including human rights training.
  • Cease using force while dispersing crowds, especially since the protesters are unarmed.
  • Provide compensation and psychological support to victims' families.

We are also alarmed by reports of abductions and other severe human rights abuses targeting protesters and dissenting voices. These actions attack freedoms of expression and association.

We urge Kenyan authorities to:

  • Cease abductions, unlawful detentions, and intimidation of protesters, activists, and journalists.
  • Ensure due process and dignity for all detained individuals.
  • Protect the rights to free speech and peaceful assembly.

We call on the international community and civil society organizations to:

  • Apply diplomatic pressure on the Kenyan government to uphold human rights.
  • Support local human rights defenders and organizations advocating for justice.
